Preferred indifferents in response to Cynicism and Epicureanism
The Cynics believed in living a simple life to an extreme extent. Life was not only devoid of all materialism, it was frequently devoid even of things considered social necessities because the Cynics viewed them more as ‘social constraints’. And living this way shamelessly was a central tenant of Cynicism.
The idea of a Preferred indifferent in Stoicism is in some ways an answer to this Cynical centre-piece: the Stoics did not believe in extreme sacrifice; but they also did not believe in excesses, like The Epicureans did.
